Acmadenia alternifolia

Family: RUTACEAE

Compact, rounded shrub with needle like leaves and a myriad of tiny pink star-like flowers in autumn and spring, very similar to Coleonema but more compact and floriferous. Does well in a sunny position and responds to regular watering and light feeding with slow release 3:1:5 or organic fertiliser. Excellent for coastal gardens.

Acmadenia heterophylla

Family: RUTACEAE

Low growing ornamental buchu with aromatic leaves and striking star-shaped pink flowers most of the year, but especially in winter. Plant in groups or as edging for best effect. Excellent coastal plant. Prune when necessary. Responds well to applications of 3:1:5 slow release or compost 2-3 times yearly.

Location: Bredasdorp to Mossel Bay. Coastal limestone areas.


Acmadenia mundiana

Family: RUTACEAE

A very rewarding aromaticic ornamental buchu, although natural habitat is limestone, it thrives well in a normal garden situation. Leaves are soft grey and stems are topped with 3 - 4 showy open pink flowers making it a wonderfull mixed border or container plant contrasting well with larger and green leaved shrubs and Restios. Plant in well drained full sun position, water well initially to settle, prune lightly to shape and feed with organic fertiliser or 3:1:5 especially before flowering.

Location: Limestone hills on the Agulhas Plain

Acmadenia obtusata

Family: RUTACEAE

One of the most striking ornamental buchus, low growing to15cm becoming absolutely covered with large, star shaped magenta flowers in winter and early summer. Plant in well drained full sun position, prune lightly to shape and feed with organic fertiliser or 3:1:5 especially before flowering. Although drought resistant, they thrive on regular watering. Lovely in containers or grouped in beds.

Location: Caledon to Riversdale.


Agathosma apiculata

Family: RUTACEAE

Grows naturally in coastal dunes and on limestone cliffs facing the sea. It adapts happily to almost any well-drained garden position from full sun to semi-shade. It is drought tolerant. The densely leafy, aromatic shrublet bears clusters of showy white flowers for most of the year, but especially in winter. Responds well to pruning and occasional fertilising with 3:1:5 slow release or compost.

Location: Riversdale to P. E. Coastal dunes and limestone areas.

Agathosma betulina

English: Round-leaf Buchu

The buchu best known for its remarkable medicinal properties. It is also an attractive and pest free garden plant with fragrant foliage and showy, pure white flowers in winter. Plant in well drained sunny position, prune to shape in summer and water and feed with 3:1:5 slow release or organic fertilizer regularly for best results.

Sweetly spice scented, this medium hight shrub has a neat, compact habit. Small shiny green leaves. Charming little white flowers attractive to bees and butterflies. Great in mixed borders and as low compact hedging. Grow in full sun well drained position mulch well in summer and water and feed with organic fertilizer such as Bounce Back or Neurog during winter

Location: Sunny mountain slopes and coastal scrub NW, KW, KM, LB, SE (Namaqualand to Port Elizabeth)

Sweetly spice scented, this medium height shrub has a neat, compact habit. Small shiny green leaves. Charming little white flowers attractive to bees and butterflies. The Paarl regional form of this widespread species. Flowers sporadically throughout the year.

Location: Slopes and flats on sand, shale or granite.
