Pappea capensis

Medium to small sized spreading tree to 7m. Bark attractive pale grey, leaves large leathery with spine toothed margins, flowers long catkin like raceme, greenish yellow. Fruit attractive black and red, edible. The whole plant has medicinal and other value.

Location: Widespread coastal belt from E. Cape to Mocambique and inland

Rarely found in cultivation, this unusual member of the protea family makes a rewarding addition to fynbos gardens. Foliage consists of 2 totally different sets - lower leaves strongly disected while the upper leaves are entire. The flowers are cream brush like heads much loved by sunbirds and last well in the vase. Needs a well drained sunny position and can be fed lightly with slow release 3:1:5, responds well to regular pruning and watering.
