Structural shade tree, large maroon flowers followed by large, oblong, grey fruits. Leaves large, deep green, very showy . Mulch thickly with good compost, water regularly and feed with high nitrogen organic or chemical fertilizer to boost growth. The huge, sausage-like pods are famous, but it will not set seed in the Cape as the pollinator is absent.

Acraea butterflies breed on this tree & their larvae are eaten by birds. Ideal for ecologically minded gardeners.
