Afrikaans: Deurmekaarbos
English: Cape Lilac
A beautiful plant with glossy dark green leaves and bunches of scented lilac flowers in summer followed by red berries. Happy in a sunny well drained spot, one of the few exceptions of indigenous plants in that it is very sensitive to feeding and requires only light dressings of compost. Prune lower branches to form a small flowering tree or trim into a multistemmed, rounded shrub.
Location: Eastern Cape
Shrub 1 to 1.5 m. Critically rare and endemic to few square kilometres in the Southern Cape. Grows on coastal limestone. Flowers in tubular and in cymes, striking red, from July to October
